How to Get to Perhentian Island

For those who wish to visit Perhentian Island, they can plan their trip to ensure it goes smoothly. There are several ways to get to Perhentian Island, either by driving a car, taking a coach bus, flight or traveling by train.

1. By Car
For traveling by car, you can use one of the following routes depending on your current location.

A. From the southern Peninsular Malaysia:
• Use the Endau-Rompin road directly onto the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2). Then, exit the highway at the Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza and continue your journey to Kuala Besut Jetty; or
• Take the PLUS Expressways and exit the highway at the Yong Peng Toll Plaza, then follow the old route Muadzam Shah – Gambang. After that, enter the East Coast Expressway (LPT) and exit the highway at the Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza, then continue your journey to Kuala Besut Jetty.

B. From Klang Valley:
• Take the Karak Expressway via Gombak Toll Plaza and enter the East Coast Expressway (LPT) and continue to East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2). Then, exit the highway via Kuala Terengganu Toll Plaza and continue the journey to Kuala Besut Jetty.

C. From the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia:
• Take the Plus Expressways and enter the Baling – Grik road until Ayer Lanas. Then, follow the road to Machang and continue the journey to Kuala Besut Jetty.
• From Perak, take the Simpang Pulai – Gua Musang road. Then, follow the road to Kuala Krai – Machang and continue the journey to Kuala Besut Jetty.

For those driving, you can park your car at the parking available around Kuala Besut Jetty at a rate of RM10 per day.

  1. By Plane
    • Buy a plane ticket (MAS Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air) to Kota Bharu
    • The distance from KLIA to Kota Bharu is around 1 hour and 10 minutes
    • Flight times depend on the respective airline
    • Taking a plane is a time-saving mode of transportation since it only takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes to fly from KLIA to Kota Bharu
    • The journey from Sultan Ismail Petra Airport to Kuala Besut Jetty takes up to 1 hour, but depends on current traffic conditions

    4. By Train
    The train is also a transportation option to Kota Bharu if you prefer a more relaxed journey. You can continue your trip by taking a bus or taxi to Kuala Besut.

FROM KUALA BESUT JETTY TO PERHENTIAN ISLAND
Boat
• You need to take a boat from Kuala Besut Jetty to Perhentian Island, which takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes depending on the weather conditions
• Make sure to arrive at the jetty early for registration and safety procedures
• Boat services operate from 8 AM to 5 PM, with the last trip around 5:30 PM
• If you are visiting Perhentian Island on a day trip, you should be at the Perhentian jetty around 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM for the return trip to Kuala Besut Jetty
• The boat to Perhentian Island is a speed boat that can accommodate 10 to 14 passengers along with 2 boat drivers and an assistant at one time
• Taking the boat is recommended as it is faster and more efficient
• Boat timings do not change except during school holidays

Ferry
• If you want to take a ferry to Perhentian Island, the ticket price is around RM35 per person for a one-way trip and takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on the tide and weather conditions
• The ferry schedule to Perhentian Island from Kuala Besut Jetty does not have fixed times, but usually operates from 8:00 AM to 4:00 or 5:00 PM
• Ferries depart every hour or when there is a sufficient number of passengers, so departure times depend on current condition
• It is recommended to check the latest schedule online or book your tickets in advance
• To avoid long queues at the ticket counter and sold-out tickets, it is advised to purchase tickets online

Pulau Besar , Melaka

Pulau Besar was once very popular with mystical stories and became a historical place in the state of Melaka. It was one of the locations where Islam was spread in the archipelago in the past. However, now the island has its own uniqueness and has become one of the tourist centres for the public. Pulau Besar is also known as an eco-expansion island located about 3 nautical miles from Bandar Hilir, Melaka and borders of the Sulawesi Islands and the Tebrau Strait.   • Tasik Biawak is a man-made lake located on a golf course and is filled with large lizards that eat fish in the lake. In this lake there is also a stone shaped like a human skull.
  • Batu Belah

This Batu Belah is 3 meters high, 35 cm wide and also has a depth of 1.5 meters. This stone was split by the warriors of Panglima Lidah Hitam, which shows the greatness of the knowledge he possesses.

  • Keramat Ular

This Keramat Ular is said to be a saint of God who can transform into a python.

  • Makam Nisan Satu

This Makam Nisan Satu is located near Batu Tengkorak which only has one tombstone, belonging to a young man aged 18-19 years.

  • Perigi Nenek Musallimah

This Perigi Nenek Musallimah is named after an old grandmother who was a village shaman and midwife. The water from this well can be used as a flower bath and can also be used as a pelaris and can heal the body. Located next to Chalet 007 and in the IMM Training Centre area.

  • Makam Syarifah Rodziah  

This Makam Syarifah Rodziah is located near the entrance to the courtyard to the surau and the Makam Sultanul Aarifeen. She is said to be the guardian of a woman named Syarifah Habsah, the daughter of Sultanul Aarifeen As Sayyid Ismail. She is the biological sister of Syarifah Rodziah and her tomb is located in the city of Melaka.

  • Batu Lesung

Batu Lesung is shaped like a stone mortar and is also known as Batu Putih.

  • Sultanul Aarifeen’s Footprint

In addition to the tomb, there is also a right footprint that is said belong to Sultanul Al-Arifin, located in the D’Puteri Kurnia Resort area, while the left footprint is said to be on Pulau Serimbun.

  • Perigi Dikaki Pulau

This well was once used by the Japanese army to behead Chinese people, and the heads were thrown into this well. It is not used until now.

  • Batu Belayar

Batu Belayar is a medium-sized stone shaped like a horse’s head. Originally, this stone was in the sea, then floated on the seabed and finally got stuck on this island. This stone is also said to be the tying of ship ropes used by 7 siblings when anchoring in Pulau Besar. Now the stone is located near Pulau Besar Jetty.

  • Keramat Masin Tawar

Keramat Masin Tawar is a water puddle resembling an old well and is located near the beach. The water will feel fresh during low tide and has its own benefits. This sacred place is guarded by a fairy princess named Puteri Nilam.

  • Perigi Bunian

This Perigi Bunian is located near the beach and in the Marina Beach Resort area. It has a mysterious story that is difficult to explain. The water in this well is said to be the cleanest and clearest.

 

How to Get to Pulau Besar

Visitors can choose to take a ferry or a boat to get to Pulau Besar. If they want to take a ferry, visitors can go to Jeti Anjung. Meanwhile, for a boat trip, visitors can take a rented boat at Muara Sungai Umbai.

Ferry services are available at a rate of RM 14 for adults, RM10 for children aged 5-12 years and RM3 for children under 5 years (round trip).

 

Muara Sungai Umbai

Visitors can also rent a speedboat at Muara Sungai Umbai for only RM 120 (round trip), maximum 10-25 people per boat.

Bentong

Bentong Town

Bentong is a predominantly Chinese town which is next to Bukit Tinggi, Janda Baik , Karak and Raub. It is famous for Durian , Ginger and Tofu fa. Chinese here are predominantly from Hakka descendent thus they are famous for Yong Tau Fu and various Hakka dishes.

Apart from the ordinary hotels in Bentong town, the accommodation at Bukit Tinggi serves those looking for relaxation and leisure. Bentong Hotspring

Bentong Hot spring or “Kolam Air Panas Bentong” is located at the old roads between Janda Baik and Bentong town.  It is around 15 to 20 minutes drive away from Bentong Town and it’s in the middle of nowhere next to a hotel and surrounded by rainforest with ECRL construction. This hot spring is free for public use without any charges.

There are 2 huge pools with mild warm water with plenty of parking space in the morning. In the morning there are a lot of Chinese uncles swimming at the pool.  If they are free , they would probably be cleaning the pool too. The water may not look too clean and most of it is covered with thick algae.  Most people would just dip their feet here ,depending on personal choice. This free hot spring offers a great rejuvenating experience. If you prefer a cleaner spot, the hotel next door provides a paid solution with cleaner pool and toilets.  Dipping Hot Spring is said to bring many benefits. Hot Spring is naturally high in minerals.

You can also opt for paid hot spring option on a hotel ‘Erya by Suria’ next which is better maintained. At the time of writing ,there is a  RM15 per head entry on daily basis , that is charged by the hotel. You can also stay at the hotel located next to the hot spring which offers private access to another part of the hotspring, You do not have to pay the RM15 entrance if you stay at the hotel. Bentong Nature Hotpsring is also in front of a newly constructed ECRL (East Coast Rail Line).

There are no restaurants near the hotspring , which is located in by the old road between Janda Baik , Bukit Tinggi and Bentong thus you will need to prepare in advance. You can eat the hotel next to the hotspring but the food can be terrible. There is a paid public toilet at the hot spring.

Cherating

Cherating is an area that often receives heavy rain throughout the year starting from October to April. It is located in the district of Kuantan, Pahang, but the nearest town is Bandar Chukai, Kemaman which takes only 5 to 8 minutes, compared to Bandar Kuantan which is about 35 minutes by car. Cherating is famous for its beaches including Chendor Beach. One of the attractions in Cherating is the leatherback turtle breeding site and the Chendor turtle sanctuary. If the rainy season arrives, many restaurants and hotels will close. Vacationing in Cherating will certainly be a wonderful moment because there are various activities that can be done besides visiting interesting places around Cherating.

Interestingly, Cherating is the first Club Med location in Asia. While spending the night and relaxing at this Club Med, various activities can also be done. This sanctuary is small in size and located in a building that only takes about 10-15 minutes to visit. There are various information and infographics related to the world of turtles displayed here. In fact, there are also several species of turtles, including newly hatched turtles, labi – labi and tuntung in the pool outside the building. Among the species of turtles here are leatherback turtles, green turtles, Hawks-bill turtles and Olive Ridley turtles. There are also interesting programs for visitors such as visiting the turtle egg hatching site, seeing the release of baby turtles into the sea and also a turtle watching program at night. There is no entrance fee, but visitors only need to register at the counter.

Besides Cherating Turtle Sanctuary, there is another sanctuary located on Chendor Beach and bordering the State of Terengganu. Here visitors have the opportunity to experience holding baby turtles and see the baby turtles heading to the beach and swimming in the ocean. Visitors will also be given a lot of useful information in educating citizens to understand the importance of these animals in the aquatic ecosystem in our country.

Visitors can also do various other activities around the Cherating River such as seeing fireflies at night and it is very popular during the rainy or monsoon season. In this season, fireflies will lay their eggs in the wet part of the cliff after the rainy season, making these fireflies more abundant than in the normal season. Cherating also has a small island rich in marine life and coral reefs making it one of the preferred locations for snorkeling and scuba diving activities. This center was established in 1989 by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. A base for the Elephant Relocation Team which started in 1974. Being the only centre in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing, translucent problem elephants from areas where their habitats are constantly being encroached by plantations, to Malaysia’s National Parks such as Taman Negara.

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary was established in 1989 by The Department of Wildlife and National Parks. This sanctuary responsible to track, capture and relocate wild elephants whose habitats have been damaged by development to protected areas such as national parks. Do note that this is not an elephant breeding center.  In addition, the centre also aims to promote public awareness of the threats, pressures and plight of elephants in Malaysia, support research on elephant relocation and conservation and as a sanctuary for tame and wild elephants in need of treatment. It’s also aims to educate the public about the importance of habitat and environmental preservation.

The Elephant Transfer Team has already started these tasks since 1974 before the establishment of the National Elephant Conservation Centre. This team has also successfully relocated more than 700 wild elephants and with this relocation, the risk of species extinction can be minimized, even the damage to agricultural areas can also be reduced. The centre currently has 17 elephants of which four are males. There are several trained elephants from Thailand and Myanmar and are used for operations to transfer wild elephants from problem areas throughout Peninsular Malaysia.

Visiting Museum

There’s a lot of information about elephants at the museum. Even though this museum is small, it provides a lot of information about these endangered animals. Elephant skulls are also on display for public viewing. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to visit the entire museum.

 

Video Show

Visitors can watch documentary video in air-conditioned rooms. The documentary is about issues affecting wild elephants, habitats that are disappearing, the role of the Elephant Transplantation Team responsible for ensuring the survival of this endangered species as well as the process of saving wild elephants from conflict areas to new habitats. Showing time is around 20 to 25 minutes.

Elephant Show

There is a daily elephant show.  Promoting awareness of elephant rehabilitation in National Elephant Conservation Center. Elephants and the trainer, “mahout” would be introduced to public.

 

Feeding the Elephants

Visitors have chance to feed the elephants. The foods that can be given are sugercane and fruits prepared at this centre. Visitors only need to put the fruit into the elephant’s mouth or let the elephant use its trunk to take the fruit. There are 6 elephants that can be fed by visitors.

 

Watching the Elephant Bath

Visitors have the chance to see elephants bathing in the nearby river and watch the life of baby elephants that are released freely in a fenced area

Over the past 25 years the strong team has helped to prevent the further decline of the elephant population by relocating more than 300 wild elephants! Kuala Gandah also aims to promote public awareness of the elephant’s plight in Malaysia and to support research into elephant translocation and conservation. It also aims to educate the public about the importance of habitat and environmental preservation.

How To Get There

Kuala Gandah is located near Temerloh, Pahang is about 200 km from Kuala Lumpur. You can charter a car there

By Road : From Kuala Lumpur, take the Karak Highway, turn left into Lanchang and turn right into Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre.

By Rail : KTM Bhd provides service to Bandar Jengka and Jerantut.

By Bus : A Sri Jengka Express – Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Tun Razak) to Bandar Jengka, Kuantan to Bandar Jengka, Kota Baru to Bandar Jengka, Alor Star to Bandar Jengka.

Alternatively there are also plenty of tours that you can book from Kuala Lumpur

Entrance Fee

Entrance for the center is free. However a small donation to help with rehabilitation and supporting the elephant is appreciated. There are no entrance fees. However a donation will be an appreciation

Bentong Hot Spring Hotel is just around 1.30 hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, making it easily accessible destination that it not too far from the city. Erya by Suria is located just right on Bentong Hot Spring.  Thera are 2 parts of Bentong Hot Spring where are part is available to pubic for free while another part of the hot spring is occupied by a private hotel. You can also walk in and pay RM15 per head to use the hotspring on EryabySuria Hotel side.

Swimming Pool

The hotel is equipped with 3 swimming pools. The largest pool is filled with fresh water and its suitable for children. It comes with some basic water park accessories so this pool is family friendly.   The other 2 are hot spring pools. The middle pool is slight warmer pool while the end pool is very warm hot spring water. Guest who booked a room can also dip the hot spring in the night.

The hotel with equipped with halls for evening , an indoor library and restaurant. This is also indoor games such as Congkak, Carom , ping pong table on the hotel.

Rooms

Rooms are modern design and comes with facilities such as air conditioning, mini fridge , tv and wifi. Rooms comes with basic buffet breakfast. Breakfast is pretty basic Malaysian breakfast with options such as nasi goreng, mee goreng and so on. There are choices of Triple rooms, Quad Rooms Pool view. At the time of writing, the private Jacuzzi villa is still under maintenance.

Sungai Lembing Hotel

Technically , Sungai Lembing is located inside Kuantan, although the drive can be 1 hour away from Kuantan Town. If you plan to visit further destination such as Rainbow Waterfall , it is  worthwhile to spend a night at Sungai Lembing. Sungai Lembing is a small Chinese hakka mining town that was abandoned. Hotels are not hard to find at Sungai Lembing town As tourism has heavily developed here over the years. There are choices from budget to middle range that comes with swimming pool. The budget hotel are usually located near or inside the town thus it is very close to restaurants and shops.
