At first, Rainbow Waterfall was only famous among local people, but after it went viral, it’s become more popular of many people, especially during weekend. Rainbow Waterfall got its name from the rainbow phenomenon that occurs in this waterfall and the scenery in this location is like a fantasy movie. It is also listed as the most beautiful waterfall in Malaysia by TripAdvisor in 2017. Because of this, Rainbow Waterfall is becoming famous of many people. Visitors who come will certainly capture beautiful moments with family and friends. Visitors who manage to arrive here will definitely bathe and feel for the clarity of the waterfall found in Rainbow Waterfall. The splash of the waterfall from a height of 250 meters along with the refraction of rainbow colors will certainly give an experience that may not be forgotten.

How To Get To Rainbow Waterfall Sungai Lembing

Visitors who want to go to Rainbow Waterfall have two options either by riding a 4 x 4 vehicle or by trekking if they have good physical strength. For those who do not have their own 4 x 4 vehicle, they can ride in the vehicle provided by local residents to get there. It is also known as ‘Taxi’ by the locals where the 4 x 4 vehicle has been modified to allow it to accommodate more passengers. A small fee is charged to visitors who use this vehicle. It is recommended that visitors use the 4 x 4 vehicle service provided because if they use their own vehicle, the possibility of getting stranded in the middle of the forest is high.

The journey through the forest area takes almost an hour. However, the 4 x 4 vehicle service will only take visitors up to the campsite in Lubuk Beruk. For those who want to camp, you can set up a tent in this area using your own equipment. However, if you do not want to spend the night, visitors need to continue their journey with trekking activities to the Rainbow Waterfall area because the 4 x 4 service ends at the campsite area only. For easily trekking, visitors can also hire a registered and certified tour guide.

If you come with your family, make sure to wear appropriate clothes and shoes. Safety must always be priority especially if you bring small children. Visitors have to walk for about 45 minutes to get to the waterfall and have to cross the strong river flow even though it is shallow. The available path is also quite steep and a little slippery if it’s just after rain (depending on the weather). If you arrive at the right time, visitors can see the rainbow from afar. However, if you arrive a little late, you may not be able to see the rainbow if the sun is already directly overhead because at this time the refraction process is difficult to occur.

  • Bring a durable waterproof bag for storing electronics and other items
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary items

Wang Kelian’s position between Malaysia and Thailand makes it a more peaceful and relaxing international gateway compared to other border gates. Tourists can enjoy the beauty of the lush tropical rainforest while walking along the Nakawan Range which is a different experience.

Many years ago, citizens of both countries could move freely without a passport within certain zones and on certain days, but now the policy has changed for the sake of national security. In fact, this security issue caused Wang Kelian to become gloomy a few years ago. However, it has risen again as a safe and enchanting ecotourism destination. Wang Kelian, which was once a dumping ground for goods from Thailand, is part of this place’s identity.

Activities in Wang Kelian

Among the interesting activities is of course shopping at the stalls around Wang Kelian and Wang Prachan. There are so many popular items available here such as clothing and accessories, home appliances, kitchenware, food and seasonal agricultural product.

Apart from shopping, visitors who come to Wang Kelian can enjoy the sunrise and the carpet cloud (viewpoint) at an altitude of 304 meters above sea level. When the fog clears, the view will show the greenery of the forest reserve and rows of majestic limestone ranges.

After enjoying the beauty of the carpet cloud, you can also visit the Perlis State Park located in the nearby area which protects unique biodiversity. Various species of flora and fauna not found in other parts of Malaysia, including the White-handed Gibbon monkey species and exotic birds can be found here.

There is also a cave not far from Wang Kelian, Gua Kelam, which is famous for its hanging bridge inside the cave. The connection between Wang Kelian and the tin mining activities in the cave in the past adds historical value to this area. The limestone formations that formed millions of years ago have made Wang Kelian part of the Perlis Geopark and an attraction for nature lovers.

Visitors who plan to cross the Thai border area need to be prepared to bring a valid passport or border pass because there is no longer a free flow method to Thailand (Wang Prachan). The operating hours of the border entrance are only open from 8.00 am to 7.00 pm.

Conclusion

Wang Kelian may not be as grand as the capital city with its skyscrapers or luxurious shopping malls. However, it is a symbol of harmony between humans, borders, and nature. Its specialty lies in the calm atmosphere, beautiful views on the hilltop, the splendor of the limestone range and the connection or relationship between the two countries that meet at a harmonious point. Wang Kelian, also known as the Northern Europe of Malaysia, is among the mandatory locations that you must stop by, and it would be incomplete if you did not come here if you visited Perlis.

The influence of Thai culture is still intact here and no wonder that a wide variety of Thai foods are sold, including sweet and fatty mango glutinous rice to spicy and authentic hot dishes. Your taste buds will be pampered with the authenticity of recipes passed down through the generations.
