Taman Negara

No holiday or vacation in the tropics is complete without visiting a tropical rainforest. And there’s no grandeur than to visit the TAMAN NEGARA, reputed to be The Oldest Jungle , The Best Kept Tropical Rainforest & The Great Natural Wonders of the world. By that it means that Taman Negara’s flora & fauna has evolved naturally over hundreds of millions of years without any disruption or major calamities.

History

Taman Negara was declared for conservation in 1938 and has become Malaysia’s premier national park and the largest in the country covering over 4343 square kilometres (434,300 hectares) of primary forest, spans across three states Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang – and is situated in the centre of the Peninsula Malaysia. Taman Negara is the most extensive protected area of pristine, lowland, evergreen rainforest in the country. Taman Negara originated from a Pahang State Legislation in 1925 and in the district of Jerantut. Over 1300 square kilometres of tropical jungle in its natural state was designated “THE GUNUNG TAHAN GAME RESERVE”. This became the National Park in 1938 when the Sultan of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan set aside the present area, and named it the “KING GEORGE V NATIONAL PARK”. After Independence, the name was changed to TAMAN NEGARA. The stated purpose of Taman Negara is “to utilise the land within the park in perpetuity, for the propagation, protection and preservation of indigeneous flora and fauna”. With so much to see and do, a trip to Taman Negara is a must on your itinerary.

Taman Negara is a popular vacation spot in Pahang and is the largest forest reserve in Peninsular Malaysia. It’s promises challenging activities with the natural attractions of flora and fauna that are over 150 million years old that will surely leave tourists mesmerized by their beauty.

Visitors can visit Pahang National Park either by road or experience a boat ride down the Kuala Tembeling River. Traveling by boat is certainly a more interesting experience for this National Park in Pahang and usually takes up to 3 hours.

Sungai Lembing | Sg Lembing Town

Sungai Lembing is a small town located in Kuantan district, Pahang. It is located about 42 km (26 miles) northwest of Kuantan and has 1001 mining history since 1906. Around the 1900s, Sungai Lembing, which is also known the Eastern El Dorado, was famous for its tin mining activities when the British company, Pahang Consolidated Company Limited (PCCL) established the tin mining industry after mining activities began in 1886.

In a period of 100 years, this mine has successfully produced 13 million metric tons of rough tin ore which can produce 150,000 metric tons of tin concentrate. As a result, Sungai Lembing Town became a commercial centre and the first movie theatre in Asia and the first hospital in Pahang were also built there. However, in 1986, the price of ore began to decline to such an extent that PCCL had to stop operations and mine workers gradually left the town and migrated to other areas for survival.

Sungai Lembing Tin Mine

There are 14 tin mines around Sungai Lembing and one of the longest is Lombong Mayah which is about 355 kilometres long and 700 meters deep. This mine is underground and the deepest in the world. Lorong Mayah has an elevator structure to go to a depth of around 1400 feet which is the deepest level and shows the challenges and risks of tin mining. In addition to mines, there are other metals in the same area including copper, iron, zinc and a small percentage gold.

Another famous Lorong is Lorong Sejuta which has a story involving the location of a small cave being a place for 20 miners who were doing illegal activities due to their unpaid wages.

Visitors can travel into this mine which will certainly give a unique experience where they have the opportunity to ride a mini wagon train or locomotive for 80 meters. In addition, visitors have to walk inside the mine and can see the information found on the tunnel walls. Visitors are charged RM15.90 for adults, RM7.95 (children) for local visitors while RM31.80 for adults and children (RM15.90) for foreign tourists.

Now, Sungai Lembing Town has become one of the tourist destinations in Pahang in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year. This destination became a popular attraction when it became an important symbol of the beginning of Pahang’s modern history through the British colonization of Malaya. Sungai Lembing Town has been revived as a heritage tourism attraction with the opening of the Sungai Lembing Museum. Further government investment makes this area one of the important tourist attractions in Pahang.

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is a highland region located about 121 km east of Ipoh and about 214 km north ofKuala Lumpur, and in Pahang, Malaysia. At 5,000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level it is the highest area on the mainland, enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 25 °C and rarely falls below 12°C year-round. Cameron Highlands is actually a district in the state of Pahang Darul Makmur although the road entrance is via Tapah and Simpang Pulai in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan. Cameron Highlands district is bordered by Lipis district on the south-east,Kelantan on the north and Perak on the west. The size of the whole Cameron Highlands district is roughly two and a quarter times the size of Singapore.
Cameron Highlands is noted for its rolling hills, cool forest, tea plantations, and fruit and vegetable farms.

Restored to their full colonial splendor, you’ll relive the time when English lords entertained their ladies to afternoon tea parties, and held evening fireside chats, while their butlers stood ever ready to serve.  This was their escape from the heat and humidity, and it can be your escape too.

The Highlands were named after William Cameron, a British colonial government surveyor who discovered the plateau during a mapping expedition in 1885. The fame of Cameron Highlands then grew during the colonial era when British planters realised the potential of its fertile mountain slopes for growing tea, then a prized commodity. Cameron Highlands is still home to many tea plantations, being Malaysia’s largest tea-producing region. With its many farms the area is also known as a major supplier of legumes and vegetables to both Malaysia and Singapore, and is one of Malaysia’s prime tourist destinations.

Key Attractions

Apart from the cool weather, key attractions in Cameron Highlands include a butterfly farm, strawberry farms, rose gardens and vegetable gardens. There are also the Brinchang Hindu Temples and the Sam Poh Chinese Mahayana Buddhist Temple. Other features include Cactus Point, Cactus Valley and the BOH Tea Plantation. There is Market Square, the Cameron Highlands Time Tunnel Galeria (at the nearby Kea Farm) and accommodation at the Kampung Taman Sedia Homestay,Tanah Rata and The Smokehouse Hotel.
