MERDEKA! MERDEKA! MERDEKA! 45 years of Independence
|
| |
31st August, Malaysians of all races will be proudly celebrating the 45 anniversary of
our independence. What started this were Malay nationalism and the desire for self-rule that
was felt around the 1930's.

A call for independence was made but the Second World War halted the move. Malaysia has certainly come a long way from 31 August 1957 when we gained independence
from the British and became known as the Federation of Malaya. Later in 1963 Malaysia was formed with the admission of Sabah and Sarawak. Singapore withdrew from the Federation in 1965 to become an independence country.
After more than 45 years of developing the country Malaysia has become the role model for developing
countries. We have shown the world that with political stability and the vision of our able leaders
we can live with harmony and peace. We have shown the rest that people of different cultures and
religions can live and work towards the progress of the nation.
Malaysia is the melting pot of the various races and each have their own traditions and customs.
In terms of dressing, most Malaysians, regardless of their race, wear western clothes. However,
during special occasions like Merdeka Day like festivals they don traditional costumes complete with
their eloborate accessories.
The mutual tolerance, acceptancew and celebration of each other's culture in Malaysia are traits that
have been successfully inculcated throughout the history of the nation. These multiple facets of Malaysia
is what makes us so colourful and fascinating to others yet so mindful of our roots and how we came
together to what we are today, a unite and harmonious people.
People of all races, tribes and ethnic groups will be out in force to pay tribute to their country and
their heritage. Underneath it all, the same spirit burns - of being Malaysian, of being united in diversity.
Come celebrate with us our independence.
